From concussion to severe TBI: stratifying the injury
Not every head injury is the same injury. The recording can place a subject along a severity continuum, not just a yes/no.
Research conducted at Veterans Affairs, including thousands of subjects across injury severities, showed that eye-movement patterns can classify and stratify TBI to a high degree. The practical result for litigation is a more honest damages conversation.
A concussion is not a moderate TBI. A moderate TBI is not a severe TBI. Subjective inventories collapse those distinctions. Oculomotor metrics do not have to.
The published foundation
Computerized eye tracking has been studied as a rapid, user-friendly method for identifying mild TBI and post-concussive patterns versus normal controls. Work associated with this program includes peer-reviewed research such as Cifu, Wares, Hoke, Wetzel, Gitchel, and Carne, “Differential eye movements in mild traumatic brain injury versus normal controls,” Journal of Head Trauma Rehabilitation (2015).
